Recent studies have suggested that behavioral health disorders will represent the leading cause of disability in the US by 2010. Other research has suggested that as many as 1 in 4 general hospital inpatients have a co-occurring behavioral health disorder. Yet, the number of hospitals that offer behavioral health services has actually been declining in recent years. Competition for capital, reimbursement pressures and staffing shortages are often cited as some of the key obstacles to provision of these services. However, none of these are insurmountable issues that should limit the effective development of services that are critical to improving the health status of most communities.

• Key trends affecting the demand for psychiatric and substance abuse services
• The challenges inherent in providing these services
• How to meet these challenges and provide services in a fiscally responsive manner
